Fans of Jerry Goldsmith’s indelible
film music legacy are in for a treat as, for the first time ever,
Rudy in Concert comes to Los Angeles on March 30 for a special 25th
anniversary celebration. The full film “Rudy” will be projected on a
massive HD screen at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles
while the Hollywood Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Justin Freer,
performs Goldsmith’s inspiring score live to picture.
In “Rudy,” the story’s hero fights the odds in pursuit of his dream
to play football for Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish. The classic sports
film that has uplifted generations of viewers (and Goldsmith
devotees!) will be preceded by a panel featuring special guests
including the real Rudy (Rudy Ruettiger), “Rudy” star Sean Astin,
director David Anspaugh and writer Angelo Pizzo.
Rudy in Concert is presented by
CineConcerts (the production company behind events such as the Harry
Potter Film Concert Series, Gladiator in Concert and DreamWorks
Animation in Concert) in partnership with Sony Pictures
Entertainment. Freer, who will be conducting the performance at
Microsoft Theater, founded CineConcerts in 2013 with the mission of
preserving and performing film music. As a former student and
protégé of Jerry Goldsmith, Freer sees the opportunity as
particularly meaningful.
“Rudy has captured the hearts and minds of millions around the
world. Celebrating this amazing
film and iconic music score with an 80-piece symphony orchestra
playing the score live to picture will both excite and bring tears
of joy to audiences everywhere.”

Goldsmith’s widow, Carol – who will be in attendance for Rudy in
Concert – shared a special piece of trivia regarding the score
composition for the film, which gives special significance to the
soundtrack of the Fighting Irish.
“When Jerry approached the challenge of writing his score for
the movie Rudy, he recognized that football plays are formally
choreographed, just like a dance,” Carol explained. “Therefore, for
one of his two main themes, Jerry was inspired to compose an Irish
jig for the high-performance athletic scenes of the tackles, plays
and training of Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish.”
Actor Sean Astin, star of Rudy, reflects on Goldsmith's musical
contribution.
“The late and incomparable Jerry Goldsmith created many of the
greatest film scores in cinema history -
“Chief among them is Rudy, a modest-sized film with big ideas. Jerry
surrounded this movie with his composition and elevated it beyond
description. Watching the film after all these years, with his music
performed live, is going to be incredible. The emotion is already
flowing.”
