Jericho
Another rare chance to
savour some of Jerry Goldsmith's music from his days in episodic
television. Jericho was a short lived WWII adventure serial
that came from the team that brought us The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
And as a consequence Jerry Goldsmith was called upon to contribute
a theme and at least one episode score. Clearly if Goldsmith
had not established himself as a busy film composer by this time
then he would have probably contributed more. As it is we get
just under 11 minutes from Goldsmith joined by additional episode
scores composed by U.N.C.L.E. regulars Lalo Schifrin,
Morton Stevens, Richard Shores and Gerald Fried. The album concludes
with a rare pilot score from legendary composer John Williams
(The Ghostbreaker).
The informative notes reveal that it was Lalo Schifrin who scored
the pilot and presented the first Jericho theme when Jerry
Goldsmith was unavailable. But it appears the producers were
not too keen on this and managed to secure Goldsmith to write
a replacement which became the signature for the entire 16 episode
series.
As with his U.N.C.L.E. theme Goldsmith provides a similar
idea though it's noted that Goldsmith wrote this in 3/4 rather
than U.N.C.L.E.'s 5/4. But essentially creates a similar
feel with brass and snares underlining the military aspect of
the show. Interestingly the theme and episode score are again
without strings, with brass and percussion carrying the weight
of the score. Goldsmith's 10 plus minutes of music for A Jug
of Wine, a Loaf of Bread, and Pow! is made up
of tried and trusted suspense that Goldsmith developed throughout
the sixties for both TV and cinema and again shows the attention
to detail Goldsmith gave such minor assignments. In between elaborate
but short workouts of the Jericho theme for brass and
winds the focus is on "sneaking around" with low key
percussive devices often punctuated with crisp snares, classic
Goldsmith piano and growling brass motifs.
This may be a pretty short Jerry Goldsmith album for Goldsmith
fandom but the additional music for the remainder of Jericho,
especially Lalo Schifrin's Mission Impossible-like pilot
score makes this a worthwhile purchase and of course you also
get to savour a rare unreleased John Williams score replete with
infectious main theme.
Another fine FSM release with their customary attention to detail,
good monaural source and excellent booklet notes from Jon Burlingame
and Jeff Eldridge.
