Ransom From Prometheus

The Prometheus label has announced a new CD re-issue of Ransom. The original Ransom LP and Silva Screen CD re-issue both suffered with very poor sound quality so it is hoped dramatic improvements have been made here. Though it remains frustrating the master tapes for the complete score are missing as this is one of Goldsmith's finest suspense soundtracks.

Elfman praises Goldsmith Over Classical Composers

An interview with Danny Elfman for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal reveals the composer has been influenced by film composers, in particular Jerry Goldsmith, rather than the classical composers. Elfman is quoted as saying "People ask me if my musical influences are Wagner or Mahler and I go, 'No, Goldsmith.' And that's how I became a composer. I was a fan who got pulled into the race."

AFI Announce Their Top 25 Film Scores

The AFI recently announced their top 25 film scores in Los Angeles. Not surprisingly John Williams' score to the first Star Wars movie came out as the clear winner. But it was good to see that Jerry Goldsmith was represented with two entries. Chinatown got the number 9 spot and Planet Of The Apes came in at number 18. Though I would question the absence of Star Trek The Motion Picture and The Omen from this list.

Intrada's website has posted news they are to re-issue their CD of Jerry Goldsmith's re-recording of his acclaimed score to Islands In The Stream. Interestingly Doug Fake clears up a mystery surrounding the key missing cue from that score for the Boat Chase sequence. Apparently it was recorded but Goldsmith was unhappy with the performance and dropped it from the album.

Intrada will also re-issue their Tombstone soundtrack by Bruce Broughton and will also include for the first time on CD Jerry Goldsmith's Cinergi fanfare which Broughton conducted as part of the Tombstone sessions.

Jerry Goldsmith Biography Update

Last year Carrie Goldsmith began a mammoth project to document the life and times of her father Jerry Goldsmith, several months before he tragically passed away. I asked if Carrie would be kind enough to pass on an update to fans on how the project is going. Carrie confirmed she is in the midst of writing and working with the huge amount of material she has amassed on her father and his career which includes many fascinating stories, a wealth of interviews with fellow composers and of course many of the film makers Jerry Goldsmith worked with over his incredible career. Carrie says she hopes to be finished within the year. I'm sure we all wish her well and eagerly look forward to her book.

Intrada Announce Capricorn One

Intrada has announced the complete original motion picture soundtrack to the 1978 sci-fi thriller Capricorn One. As we know Goldsmith came to London and made a spectacular re-recording of highlights from the score with the National Philharmonic for the album to avoid the high US re-use fees. As great as the album was and sounded it did miss out on some wonderful extra cues and of course the original film version presentations.

Intrada's disc is limited to 3000 copies and is available for pre-order now. It will go on sale on the 19th July.

Alien Nation Officially Released!

Varese Sarabande's latest set of limited edition CD club releases features a very surprising title; Alien Nation, one of Jerry Goldsmith's few rejected scores. Written in 1988 for director Graham Baker's follow up to The Final Conflict, it features one of only three all electronic scores written by the composer. Though essentially a minor work in the Goldsmith canon it nonetheless remains a sort after unreleased score amongst his many followers.

Although the composer was too unwell to properly start work on the picture Anspaugh revealed Goldsmith did compose a demo theme for possible use. Though it does not feature in the William Ross score.
