The Cassandra Crossing Complete
Score 2 CD Set
The
Prometheus label has announced a 2 CD set of Jerry Goldsmith's complete score to
The Cassandra Crossing. Sadly the complete score on disc 1 is in mono.
With the original stereo album content on disc 2. Nonetheless this is a very
welcome release for those who've missed out on the original album CD from RCA and
perhaps for those who have found their old CD getting more bronzed by the
day. The other great news is of course the extra music. The early
Searching The Train
sequence being a major Goldsmith highlight.
The set is expected to be available from mid December. Pre-order now from
BuySoundtrax.

2010 covering the remainder of the 80s and beyond.
All concerts will be conducted by composer David Newman who has gone back to
Goldsmith's original sketches and prepared all new suites for classic Goldsmith
scores to A Patch Of Blue, The Sand Pebbles and Patton. In
addition suites from The Planet Of The Apes and excerpts from The Blue
Max will also feature.
The first afternoon symposium will be chaired by Jon Burlingame and feature

Black
Patch Comes To DVD!
Jerry
Goldsmith's first theatrical movie comes to Region 1 DVD on September 30th!
Black Patch was a western that featured George Montgomery as Clay 'Black
Patch' Morgan a Marshal who puts a friend in Jail for Bank robbery, while two
locals plot to break him out. This will be a fascinating opportunity for most
Jerry Goldsmith fans to get to hear the composer's earliest score for the
first time. No extra content is mentioned.
The Omen
Blu-Ray To Feature Isolated Score in 5.1
The
Digital Bits website
reports that 20th Century Fox in the US will release
the original Omen movie on Blu-Ray on September 9th with all the extras from the previous
two special edition DVDs plus the isolated score in Dolby Digital 5.1.
Previously the isolated track only existed on the old Laser Disc
version of the movie released in the 90s. There will also be an
additional
commentary track featuring Nick Redman and Jeff
Bond discussing the score. The isolated score track
remains the only way to listen to Jerry Goldsmith's Oscar
winning score in its entirety as the deluxe edition soundtrack
released by Varese Sarabande in 2001 omitted a number of cues
from the score.
Sadly no indication on whether other territories will get this
release.

Jerry
Goldsmith's Friend And Orchestrator Alexander Courage Has Died
It
has been reported that the famed composer of the original
Star Trek TV series theme, Alexander Courage passed away on
May 15th. He was 88. Courage scored a handful of movies in the
50s but spent most of his time scoring for TV, as well as
adapting music and of course orchestrating scores by many of the
leading film composers including Alex North and John Williams.
Courage conducted a number of Jerry Goldsmith scores including Stagecoach
and the Flint scores for release on soundtrack album. Courage worked extensively
on the Waltons, scoring over 100 episodes and picking up
from where Goldsmith's famous theme and early episode scores
left off. Courage orchestrated for Goldsmith on occasion during
the 70s and 80s but became Goldsmith's principal orchestrator in the
90s as Arthur Morton's health began to fail. As well as
orchestrating for his close friend he also contributed
source music for Goldsmith most notably heard in Matinee
and The Wind
And The Lion. Goldsmith even asked Courage to provide a
special arrangement of his original Star Trek TV theme
for use in the score for Star Trek The Motion Picture.

Under
Fire Soundtrack Re-issued By FSM
FSM
has re-issued the original soundtrack album to one of Jerry
Goldsmith's most critically acclaimed scores. Under Fire
was Oscar nominated back in 1983 and was lauded by even some of
the composer's harshest critics. FSM points out that they did
try to source the missing cues and alternates but were unable to
find any master tapes. But as the previously released WB Japan
and German discs are hard to find and expensive this new
affordable release with FSM's customary gold standard production
values and booklet should be of great interest to all Goldsmith
aficionados.

Baby Secret Of The Lost
Legend CD Sold Out Within A Day!
Intrada's spectacular
CD release of Baby Secret Of The Lost Legend has sold out within a day!
Sadly it does seem some people have bought extra copies to sell on
eBay to try and make money, leaving some fans who missed it to buy a
copy at an inflated price. Let's hope in the future labels releasing such "Holy
Grail" scores can extend the license to put off prospectors.
Intrada
Announce Baby Secret Of The Lost Legend On CD!
No,
your eyes do not deceive you! Intrada have pulled off an incredible coup and released one of Jerry Goldsmith's most sort
after action adventure scores for Walt Disney's early Dinosaur
adventure. Back in 1993 Intrada's Doug
Fake produced a special promo disc featuring around 20 minutes
of this stunning score for attendees of an award dinner in
honour of Jerry Goldsmith. That disc was only available to the
select few and was considered a one off. Now in 2008 Intrada
have managed to do the unthinkable and release the complete
score, limited to 3000 copies. Thank you
Intrada and thank you Disney!

Jerry
Goldsmith Biography Unlikely To Ever Be Published According To
FSM's Lukas Kendall
Lukas Kendall has broken his silence on
his involvement with the Jerry Goldsmith biography penned by
Carrie Goldsmith. In a recent post to readers on his message
board Lukas reveals he
was attempting to assist Carrie and Joel with publication and
potential legal issues with some of the content. He reveals he
showed the manuscript to a third party without permission and
Carrie and Joel terminated their relationship with him. Lukas
goes on to say that the last he heard Carrie had shelved the
project indefinitely. You can read the post at this
link.
Obviously this is very sad news for Jerry Goldsmith's legion of
fans who were eagerly awaiting Carrie's book but at least we all
know the situation. Obviously we still hope that all the time
and effort Carrie put in to the book is not wasted and one day
we will see this important work published.
International Film Music Critics Association Award For Intrada's
Alien
Intrada's
magnificent 2 CD presentation of Jerry Goldsmith's classic score
to Alien produced by Mike Matessino and Nick Redman has
won the award in the category "Best
New Release/Re-Release/Re-Recording Of An Existing Score"
at the
International Film Music Critics Association. Intrada's
other sterling effort The Wind And The Lion was
nominated. Intrada also picked up the award for "Film Music
Label Of The Year".
New
Rambo Movie To Feature Goldsmith's Theme
The
new Rambo movie scored by the talented Brian Tyler is to feature Jerry Goldsmith's
classic theme from First Blood. The soundtrack on the Lionsgate label
will be released on February 5th and contains three cues that feature the theme
proper. It looks as if at the very least Jerry Goldsmith's theme bookends the
film. Though Tyler has written his own Rambo theme too. Sadly the action
music is woefully feeble compared to the complex and imaginative writing Jerry
Goldsmith contributed to the first three Rambo movies.
Stallone was recently questioned on the use of
Goldsmith's score over at
AICN.
