Fate Is The Hunter DVD
Release
In 2011
A new specialist DVD
label has launched called Twilight Time and will focus on releasing limited
edition DVDs of obscure and previously unreleased movies from the 50s and 60s,
by 20th Century Fox. One
of their initial launch titles will be the obscure Jerry Goldsmith scored
suspense drama
Fate Is The Hunter. All the titles will be presented in their original wide screen ratios
and will be genuine pressed DVDs as opposed to on demand DVD-Rs. Each release
will include a collectible 8 page booklet complete with original essay, stills
and poster art.
When possible isolated scores will also feature! The company has been setup by
Warner Bros veteran Brian Jamieson and Nick Redman, whom many soundtrack fans
will know.
Their first title The Kremlin Letter will street January 25th
2011. Discs will then be released on the last Tuesday of each month thereafter.
Titles can be ordered exclusively from
Screen Archives! Let's hope we see more rare and unreleased Jerry Goldsmith scored movies produced
specially for movie and movie music fans.
The Homecoming From FSM In 2011?
Recently FSM's
popular message board has been discussing Jerry Goldsmith's music score from the
pilot to the Waltons. The TV movie The Homecoming inspired one of
the composer's best loved themes and allowed the composer to fashion a
sentimental but heart warming score. Recently Lukas Kendall responded to the
post and hinted that the title was in the works. Keep a look out for more
Goldsmith news in the new year!
Poltergeist - 2 CD Set From FSM!
FSM
confirmed earlier in the year they were working on a definitive presentation of
Jerry Goldsmith's Oscar nominated score to Poltergeist and now they
deliver on their word. This spectacular set closes the book on an important
Goldsmith work and an incredible year of soundtrack releases. Goldsmith clearly
relished the opportunity to work with the legendary Spielberg and delivered a
sumptuous, powerful brass lead work encompassing so many classic Goldsmith
stylistic moments. A heartbreaking theme for Carol Anne and the family
juxtaposed with exhilarating and terrifying music for the demon that tears the
family and their house quite literally apart.
The 2 CD set includes the previously released complete film soundtrack on disc 1
but now fully restored from the four-track 1/2 " tapes by Bruce Botnick and featuring music not used in the film. Disc 2
presents the popular album presentation Goldsmith produced for the LP back in
1982. Plus a rare selection of alternates. Add to that a marvellous booklet by
producer Mike Matessino who's essay leaves no stone unturned with regard to the
film and score.
As an unusual bonus the album closes
with the re-recorded cues from The Prize. Though previously released by
FSM they have now discovered a new superior source - ½” three-track masters and
also an additional cue previously unreleased!
The set is limited to a generous 10,000 copies. Order from
Screen Archives!
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier - 2 CD Set From La-La Land!
La-La
Land announce a special 2 CD set of Jerry Goldsmith's exciting Star Trek
sequel score. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier may have been one of the
weaker movies in the series but true to form Goldsmith delivered another
stunning score. Goldsmith mixes his classic action writing with the grandeur of
his ground breaking and truly spectacular Star Trek theme, and gets to
reunite it with his memorable theme for the Klingons too. Add in some
beautifully melancholy moments for Kirk and his closest colleagues and round it
out with the mystical and powerful God segments and you have one of the finest
Jerry Goldsmith sci-fi music events.
Back in 89 we got a solid album from producer Goldsmith on the Epic label.
Goldsmith picking out all the highlights. Well, almost as fans spotted a
plethora of extra music to salivate over. Just over 20 years later Paramount, Sony
and La-La Land come together to present the complete film soundtrack on disc 1,
with the album presentation on disc 2, plus a few alternates. Produced by Lukas
Kendall and Mike Matessino. Incredible! Well done to all and thank you La-La
Land!!
Limited to 5000 copies. Order from the 30th November at the

First Blood - 2 CD Presentation From Intrada!
Intrada
celebrate their 25th anniversary with a special unlimited edition
release of the complete soundtrack to First Blood, spread over a deluxe 2
CD set. Goldsmith’s magnificent action score was first released on CD by Intrada
back in 1988. Their first limited title. That CD featured Goldsmith’s LP album
assembly plus one bonus cue - No Power. Then Varese issued the same
content from the same source in 2000. This new set is sourced from the recently
discovered multi track session tapes made in London back in 82 and reveal a
dramatically improved sound from what has been heard before.
Intrada present the film soundtrack in complete form on disc one for the first
time, with Goldsmith's stunning album assembly on disc two, which is also
sourced from the multi tracks. Intrada have also been able to include a few
surprises over the two disc set; an unreleased pop arrangement of the theme -
another possible alternate to the end credits. Also included is a rare demo of
the song made by Goldsmith and lyricist Hal Shaper, the actual recording of the
Carolco studio logo piece and fascinating trailer music intended for the
Rambo sequel First Blood Part II. Add detailed booklet notes and you
have the definitive release of Jerry Goldsmith’s masterful, powerhouse action
opus anchored by his haunting and beautiful main theme. Happy 25th anniversary
Intrada and thank you for the first and the next 25 years!

critically acclaimed music from one of the finest war movies ever produced is
re-issued on a special 2 CD set from Intrada. Doug Fake gets to put out
a personal favourite and give it the deluxe presentation it deserves. Patton
the film soundtrack was released by FSM back in 1999 but has since sold out.
However, at
the time of the film's release there was a superior re-recording of the
score's highlights issued on LP. This recording has never appeared on CD -
until now! Intrada's special set presents the film soundtrack, plus extra
Echoplex session recording and the soundtrack album re-recording - with bonus
finale cue in stereo sans dialogue.

A Gathering Of Eagles Soundtrack From Varese!
Jerry
Goldsmith's earliest foray into the world of military themed action and
adventure scoring comes to CD for the very first time! A Gathering Of Eagles
details the cold war posturing exerted by the US and Russians to ensure total
nuclear annihilation by keeping massive bombers airborne at all times ready to
divert to their targets at a moments notice if the unthinkable happened. The
drama plays out at an under performing USAF base with Rock Hudson brought in to
take over the failing wing. It was 1963 and Jerry Goldsmith was about to deliver
the kind of scoring that would become his trade mark throughout his later
career. Goldsmith was clearly a natural at making the might of the US military
even mightier with his kinetic rhythmic scoring style making inspired use of
percussion and brass - the staple military instrumentation.
Varese Sarabande's CD Club deliver a full score CD limited to 3000 copies and
considering it comes from 1963 it sounds pretty impressive for glorious mono.

More Goldsmith TV Movie Music Comes To CD!
The Intrada label
premiere two rare Jerry Goldsmith scored TV movies from the early 70s on one
limited edition CD!
A
Step Out Of Line was from 1971 and was a heist movie about three ex-army
friends (Peter Falk, Peter Lawford and Vic Morrow) who plan a bank robbery to
cure their financial woes. The score afforded Goldsmith to work in the Jazz
idiom but still ensured his dramatic orchestral style remained a vital part of
the proceedings. As per usual Goldsmith worked miracles with a small orchestra
and provided plenty of colour.
The
Brotherhood Of The Bell from 1970 starred Glenn Ford as a member of a
ritualistic society who decides to turn on them and expose their methods when he
is involved in an assignment that causes the suicide of an associate. Goldsmith
provided an unsettling score for strings combining both Jazz and Classical
styles and utilised unusual percussion ideas to compound the foreboding
atmosphere and provide a signature to the ominous Bell itself.
Intrada presents the complete scores for both films from pristine mono tapes.

The Going Up Of David Lev Soundtrack
Buysoundtrax
has announced the first official CD release of a rare and very obscure Jerry
Goldsmith score from 1973. The Going Up Of David Lev was a TV movie and
told the story of a young Jewish boy making a journey from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem
to learn about his heritage and his Father who has been killed during the Six
Day War. Goldsmith provided a short but sweet score focussing on a small
ensemble favouring a Folk style incorporating Guitar, Recorder, Accordion,
Clarinet and Tambourine. The album also includes two infectious songs sung by
Topol, though are not penned by Goldsmith.
The source is not surprisingly mono but has
been digitally mastered and sounds clean. The disc is limited to 2000 copies, so
order this little Goldsmith gem before it disappears.

Intrada Consider Re-issue
Of Link Soundtrack
Intrada
has revealed they have the license for Jerry Goldsmith's 1986 soundtrack to the
Orangutan thriller Link. But say the original elements from the sessions
are missing so they can only issue the soundtrack album that Varese originally
released at the time of the movie. Intrada has invited opinions from fans via
their
Message Board on whether to go ahead with a straight re-issue. As the CD
has long been deleted it should still be popular amongst the die hard
enthusiasts who missed out. We wait to hear more from Intrada on their plans.

Twilight Zone Series Blu-rays To Feature Isolated Scores
Image
Entertainment has announced the initial season 1 Blu-ray release of the
acclaimed Rod Serling sci-fi fantasy series The Twilight Zone. They have
revealed each season set will feature a multitude of extras that includes 34
isolated scores. Jerry Goldsmith of course scored 7 episodes (The Four Of Us Are
Dying, The Big Tall Wish, Nightmare As A Child, Nervous Man In A $4 Room, Dust,
The Invaders and Back There). And although the
scores are available on a Silva America CD set fans should find it of interest to hear
Goldsmith's dramatic music against the polished HD visuals. Season 1 is available on September
14th.

The Edge - Complete Score CD From La-La Land
La-La Land Records
has announced a new expanded presentation of Jerry Goldsmith's wilderness
adventure score from 1997. The Edge had a solid CD release at the time of
the film but La-La Land promises over 65 minutes of music and have also fixed
the mastering issue which plagued the finale track on the original CD. The
release is limited to just 3500 copies and will be available to order from the

FSM Announce 2 CD OUTLAND
Complete Score!
FSM
has officially announced their release of Jerry Goldsmith's score to Peter Hyams' High Noon in space thriller from 1981. Outland tonally
followed on from the difficult Alien assignment but Goldsmith showed no
sign of being uninspired and delivered one of his most intense and atmospheric
thriller scores. The fact it was set in outer space was of little importance.
Goldsmith provided a raw and uncompromising symphonic score performed by the
legendary National Philharmonic. The original Outland album featured a
solid 40 minute program and sounded superb. FSM of course have left no stone
unturned and delivered the complete Goldsmith score, along with the alternate
rec room source music and Morton Steven's adaptation of Goldsmith's material for
the finale fight outside the space station. A second disc presents the original
album tracks. As always the package is completed with detailed booklet notes.Wow!

early movie in Jerry Goldsmith's career is to appear as part of a film noir DVD
set from Columbia Pictures. City Of Fear is one of five period features
on Film Noir Classics II and is released on July 6th on R1 DVD. The score
to City Of Fear has appeared on a boot CD but the film itself remains an
obscurity that many fans may not have seen. With a limited budget and
Goldsmith's impressive early talent City Of Fear remains an watchable B
movie thriller.

New Outland CD In The Works By FSM
Lukas
Kendall's new
Facebook page, featuring archive photos of FSM's exploits over the
years, makes mention of a new Outland CD being produced. It is assumed
the new disc will feature the missing score absent from the original soundtrack
album as well as Morton Steven's adaptation of Goldsmith's action music for the
finale set piece.
No word on when this title will surface but it is assumed it will be sometime
this year.
The Spiral Road From Varese Sarabande!
Another
Jerry Goldsmith rarity makes it to CD, officially for the first time! The
Spiral Road dates back to 1962 and despite a grand production never had a
soundtrack release. Goldsmith's exotic scoring precedes the classic score to
The Sand Pebbles by a few years and shows the young composer already making
easy work of exotic locales, impressive vistas and high drama. The movie may not
be worthy of recall but Goldsmith's epic score most certainly is.

Players From Intrada!
Intrada
announce the first ever official CD release of a neglected Jerry Goldsmith gem
from 1979. Players was a love story set against the world of championship
Tennis. Goldsmith delivers both a beautiful theme for the main protagonists as well as a
spectacularly rousing overture for the Tennis action. The two elements are poles
apart but make a stunning combination. Intrada presents the complete film score plus
bonus tracks in superb stereo from Paramount's prized vaults. Wow!

The List Of Adrian Messenger US/UK DVD Released
John
Huston's enjoyable 1963 murder mystery The List Of Adrian Messenger comes
to DVD in the US and UK. The US unfortunately get a DVD-R on demand version
while the UK gets a properly pressed DVD. There are no extras but it does offer
a crisp black and white image and is in wide screen. While the clean mono
soundtrack puts Jerry Goldsmith's darkly comic score centre stage. And as it
remains unreleased on CD is worth picking up in this form. Seek out the R2 UK
version if you can which comes with different artwork.
Poltergeist Soundtrack Re-issue And 2CD From FSM!
Sony
Classical will reissue the Poltergeist soundtrack in February. The
content is the same as the Rhino label version released back in 1997, which has
been deleted for many years. For those who missed the Rhino release and do not
want to pay the exorbitant second hand prices on the net then this will be of
interest.
However, more interesting is a comment from FSM's Lukas Kendall on the
FSM Message Board which reveals that FSM plan to issue a special 2CD set
of Poltergeist later in the year. He also states that Mike Matessino will be
going back to the source elements and improving on the Rhino master. The second
disc will take in alternates of cues as well as the original LP program which
some fans have missed.
The Blue Max - Complete Score From Intrada
As
a Goldsmith fan you may have thought the book had been closed on the soundtrack
album to this early classic Goldsmith score. But Intrada have proven fans wrong with this impressive new CD
of the complete score that definitely closes the book on the
magnificent
Blue Max score!
Intrada have gone back to the archives and discovered the original mixes
originally recorded at Shepperton
Studios in London with the mighty National Philharmonic ensemble and worked with
the multi track mixes at Fox. What they can now present
is the best possible presentation of this score taking in correct takes and
assemblies of cues and eliminating the processed and quite frankly lifeless
sound that made the previous Sony release somewhat disappointing. Add previously
unreleased music and you have a very special presentation of an epic Goldsmith
score from the composer's exciting sixties
period.
Sadly the title was limited to a lower than normal 2500 copies and
quickly sold out from the
Intrada
website. You may find copies at other popular dealers though. So
start searching for this very special release.
Islands In The Stream - Film Soundtrack Released
FSM
has announced the first Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack release for 2010 and it's a
stunner. The first official release of the actual film soundtrack from
Goldsmith's highly regarded score to Islands In The Stream. The film and
score were a personal favourite of the composer and he went on to re-record the
majority of the score back in 1986 for the
Intrada label. Intrada's superlative
CD now has the perfect companion - the original film soundtrack featuring missing
highlight "the boat chase", courtesy of Bruce Kimmel at Kritzerland who
preserved the tapes when he was involved in a possible LP release of the score
in the late seventies. Incredible news!

Goldsmith's Toccata For Solo Guitar Re-recorded
One
of Jerry Goldsmith's earliest non film music efforts has been re-recorded by
Gregg Nestor. The short atonal piece was one of three commissioned by Brazilian
guitarist Laurindo Almeida in the 50s for a solo guitar album from Capitol. The other two were written by Henry Mancini and Alex North,
also available by Nestor.
The piece can be downloaded from some
Amazon stores. Sadly not available to all territories.
Jerry Goldsmith Online 10th Anniversary!
Happy new year! 2010 is the 10th
anniversary year of Jerry Goldsmith Online. The fan based website site I
actually started up in 1999 but went properly live in 2000. Since then I have
done my utmost to report on and post anything to do with the career of the great
Jerry Goldsmith and to document his incredible career through articles, reviews
and listings of his repertoire.
It remains a tragedy that I am not reporting on the latest Jerry Goldsmith score
or reviewing his latest concert hall appearance but his memory lives on through
his incredible music and the wonderful efforts of the film music labels that
regularly release his scores, often for the first time. 2009 saw an incredible
amount of rare titles that many thought would never materialise. We not only
thank the likes of Intrada, FSM, Prometheus, La-La Land and Varese Sarabande but also the
studios that have now allowed these great labels to access their treasured
vaults.
Finally I would like to personally thank all of those who have contributed to
the site over the last 10 years through reviews, articles and research. I've
also appreciated those who have emailed me to correct my mistakes. I wish we
could have more contributors to the site so if you are a Goldsmith fan and can
offer help then please get in contact.
