In 1995 Star Trek: Voyager launched on to
Television screens, featuring a whole new cast and new ship and once again
boldly going where no-one has gone before!
When Voyager was being put together, the producers
turned to one man who was a guarantee to provide a great new theme for this new
Star Trek series. That man was of course Jerry Goldsmith. Incidentally Goldsmith
was to have written the theme for Star Trek Deep Space Nine but missed
out due to scheduling problems.
Jerry Goldsmith chose not to do the obvious and provide
another epic theme as per Star Trek: The Motion Picture, instead writing
a beautiful, sweeping theme perfectly accompanying the images of space and
Voyager flying past planets and nebulas. It is a fantastic accompaniment to the
opening credits but also a wonderful listen without the visuals.
The Original Version (Extended) really is in the
wrong place as track 3, this theme is the one in the series, albeit a shortened
version, and should’ve kicked off the CD which is why I mention it first.
Track 1 is the Main Title: Pop Version arranged
and performed by Jerry’s son Joel Goldsmith. This Pop Version adds synthesized
drums and synthesized electric guitars and takes away the subtle beauty of the
theme.
Lastly is the Main Title: Synth Version which
begins with atmospheric sounds and synthesized chimes and is the slowest
presentation of the theme. It’s very interesting to hear it in this form and the
synthesized voices add an interesting element, but once again pales in
comparison to Jerry’s original version.
The Star Trek: Voyager Main Title CD single in
my mind is a must own for Jerry Goldsmith fans like myself and GNP Crescendo
have put together a fantastic little CD.
