Jerry Goldsmith 's TIMELINE Score From Varese!

A belated news item for Varese's exciting December 24th announcement that they're to release Jerry Goldsmith's unused score from Timeline. An official release of a rejected score is a rare event which Goldsmith fans could have only dreamt about after hearing the news early last year that Goldsmith's score was to be replaced. Varese are quite rightly pulling out all the stops for this one, giving the disc the Deluxe Edition treatment and presenting it in the SACD format.

I'd personally like to add my thanks to Robert Townson and
Varese Sarabande, Richard Donner and the producers of Timeline, the Paramount Pictures Corporation and of course Jerry Goldsmith for making this unique event possible.

Goldsmith Cancels Monaco Appearance

Jerry Goldsmith has sadly had to pull out of the Monaco concert scheduled for the 28th of December on health grounds. We wish the composer well over the holiday period and hope that he is well enough to travel to London and celebrate his 75th Birthday in 2004.

Goldsmith's TIMELINE - Donner Speaks Out

Music From The Movies has major coverage of the Timeline scoring project in their next issue, but as a taste of what's to come they have posted highlights of an exclusive interview with Richard Donner who clarifies what happened with Jerry Goldsmith's unused score! With such praise from Donner and no hard feelings, could this be a green light to get the score officially released? Watch this space.

Goldsmith's TIMELINE Score Review

Film Score Monthly have had a review submitted to them of the mythical score Jerry Goldsmith wrote to Timeline. The unused score/rejected score* (delete as appropriate) remains a bit of a Holy Grail amongst his aficionados, all eager to get to hear what it was like. The positive review also details track titles and timings.

TV Assignment For Goldsmith

Jerry Goldsmith is reported to be taking on a TV assignment with frequent collaborator; Fred Schepisi. The HBO movie, Empire Falls, is based on Richard Russo's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and is a intimate drama about life in a run-down Maine mill town where the main employer, a shirt factory, has closed. Shooting is scheduled to continue into November. The three hour movie will premiere in 2004 and may include a theatrical run.

A L I E N Quadrilogy DVD - Goldsmith Speaks

The new 9 disc DVD boxset featuring the four Alien movies includes a section on the scoring of the first film, with Goldsmith given the chance to speak out at the frustrating time he had scoring the movie, and the little input he got from Scott and co. Remarkable considering the score is regarded as a classic of the genre. Strangely the box set does not include the isolated score options found on the 20th Anniversary DVD.

Poltergeist II Deluxe Edition CD From Varese

Varese has announced a deluxe edition for October - Poltergeist II: The Other Side. This soundtrack has had an unusual history with Intrada first issuing a short 30 minute album in 1986, then Varese picked up the European rights (under Intrada's nose) and released their version. Then in 1993 Intrada issued an expanded CD, running at over 53 minutes. Varese's new disc has been expanded further, to 60 minutes, and essentially contains one new track, with one other extended. C2 Pictures Fanfare

Film music fans have spotted some new Goldsmith music that appears on the opening to Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines. C2 Pictures, an independent production company run by Carloco's Mario Kassar and Andrew Vajna has a new Goldsmith fanfare recorded earlier this year. The short intro provides a similarly grand accompaniment as Goldsmith's own brilliant Cinergi fanfare.

Timeline Score Tracks?

An interesting news item has appeared at the TimelineMovie website, supposedly revealing track details for Goldsmith's rejected score. There is also some positive comments from someone who is said to have heard Goldsmith's score?

LSO 2004 Concert Date Amendment

The LSO website has dropped the second concert date of the 18th of February 2004. They confirm that the second concert date was included only as a possibility and had to be dropped due to scheduling with the composer.

The LSO have posted a little more info on next year's Birthday concerts for Jerry Goldsmith. There are now two dates which are the 17th and 18th February @ 7:30pm. Visit the LSO for more info.

Looney Tunes Confirmed

Although a lot of sources have had Jerry Goldsmith down for this project for sometime, I have not heard confirmation until now. Sources now confirm Goldsmith is on board and was to have been at a recent test screening of the movie (minus animation) but was unable to attend on health grounds. We hope to bring you more news on this new score soon.

Looney Tunes The Movie First look At A Rough Cut

Looney Tunes: Back In Action was in a real rough sketch form where the animation wasn't completed but this was the first opportunity to see Dante's new movie and it still proved to be hugely enjoyable. There were many sketched animated characters and paper cut outs but we were there to test out what we thought of the live action sequences. For a Dante film this is him having fun and going crazy very much like in Gremlins 2. A lot of the effects remain to be put in though. Overall the movie was very funny and kept to the humour and spirit of the true Looney Tune characters. I personally do not see any reason to cut this film down. The film was temp tracked with Raiders of the Lost Ark, Goldfinger, The Living Daylights, some Austin Powers music, Star Wars, Star Wars The Phantom Menace, some old classic horror scores. There is a big spy/action/adventure spoof to the whole thing so this could be one of the busiest scores in quite a while. I would think that a comparison to Roger Rabbit would'nt seem fair but this film does have that Looney Tunes humour and balances well for kids and adults.

Thanks To Brandon Moore.

Timeline Score Rejected

Unfortunately, as posted at Music From The Movies, we have to report that Jerry Goldsmith's score to Timeline has been rejected. Goldsmith completed his tasks for the score in March before coming to London for his two concerts. New up and coming composer Brian Tyler has been given the opportunity to re-score it. The movie is due November.

As with all rejected scores the reasons for it being replaced aren't always clear cut and good enough reason in many people's opinions. Sources who have heard some of his score offer some hint at possible reasons. On the positive the main theme/love theme is said to be tremendous and quite beautiful, and usually quite enough to provide the hook for the remainder of the score to hang from. However, sources claim there were some problem areas with some of the action/suspense cues that may needed to have been re-worked. Apparently Goldsmith did get an opportunity to come back and re-work some of his score, since the movie had been edited quite severely, still time played a factor and the composer in the end had to move on to other commitments leaving the way for a brand new score to be written.

Fan Petition

Not surprisingly fans have been quite devastated by this news and there is now a petition online in the faint hope of swaying Paramount to restore the Goldsmith score. Show your support at:-

Jerry Goldsmith In Spain

The Barcelona Symphony's website has been updated with information on the composer's concerts which appear to be on the 9th, 10th and 11th of May. As you would expect these should mirror the recent London programmes but given the extra day it may mean further music may be performed. Watch this space. More details from their website. To find the entry select 'Propers Concerts' then look to the bottom of this list to see the J Goldsmith entry and link.

Jerry Goldsmith In London

Jerry Goldsmith made a triumphant return to the Barbican Centre, London and the London Symphony Orchestra last night in the first of two concerts. This was his first concert appearance since his illness early last year. Goldsmith was to have conducted the Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra in Japan on March 12th and 13th but could not travel due to other commitments.

Jerry Goldsmith was in a relaxed and upbeat mood clearly enjoying his fandom and the interest we have in his music. Goldsmith revealed little in terms of current events although confirmed he had just completed additional recording tasks in LA on Timeline and news filtered through that although the Looney Tunes movie is a very strong possibility it still remains an unconfirmed assignment.

Goldsmith to return in 2004

Jerry Goldsmith confirmed he would be returning to London and the LSO next February for the orchestra's anniversary celebrations when the composer will perform a new piece of music he will be writing for the orchestra.

Full reports on both evenings are now on the Spotlight page or click the link below. I have also posted some of my poor photographic efforts from the second evening but still want to hear from those who have photos from both evenings to send them to me at the usual address and I will display them here with full credit to the photographer.

Jerry Goldsmith In London 19th March And 20th March Report.

LSO Concerts - Final Programs

The two LSO concerts at the Barbican Centre in London have been finalised by the composer and the orchestra. The details can be viewed on the concert page. Both concerts look to be an exciting evening for Goldsmith fanatics and film music fans alike.

Assignments?

As most know, or assumed along time ago, Goldsmith should collaborate with Fred Schepisi on the big screen adaptation of Steve Martin's successful play Picasso At The Lapin Agile, but the other Schepisi 2003 movie It Runs In The Family (previously known as A Few Good Years) has been scored by Paul Grabowsky.

Looney Tunes Back In Action remains unconfirmed at this early stage but considering the relationship between composer and director, it seems a safe bet for later in the year.

A Note From Fred Schepisi
